Dartmoor Vale 2011
The Dartmoor Vale races will be held this year on 16 October, in association with Sibelco UK. The start and finish will be at the East Gold Works, Newton Road, Newton Abbot. This is opposite the Newton Abbot Racecourse and next to Tesco.
The event includes a marathon, a half marathon and a 10 kilometre race and is now in its ninth year. It is expected that the number of entrants will at least equal those of last year.
Entries are now being accepted from keen runners from any part of the country and beyond. The three races are:
Full marathon, 26.2 miles.
Half marathon, 13.1 miles.
10 kilometre race.
The routes for the marathon and the half marathon take runners out on the roads of the Teign Valley to Chudleigh and back down the leafy country lanes alongside Ugbrooke Park.
The total number of entrants will be limited to 1000. This includes 200 for the marathon, 400 for the half marathon and 400 for the 10k. As last year, we will not have a headline charity but have told charities that they can register their own teams who will raise sponsorship and we will be fund matching.
Fund raising is an essential part of the Dartmoor Vale Races, with runners raising significant sums for charities each year. More than £80 000 has been raised for charities over eight years and a over £25 000 raised by runners for their own charitable causes.
We will not be accepting entries for the races on the day.
The closing date for entries is Friday October 7.

Words from the Rotary President
What a year of organisation and what a Dartmoor Vale 2010 was!!
We needed to find a new site as we were no longer able to use the racecourse. This was provided by Sibelco for which we were and are most grateful as they have agreed to provide this great site again this year. But that was only the first Kilometre of our race. We needed to replicate the success of our previous races from the new site. The route, of course, had to be re-plotted, parking arranged, new locations chosen for control, baggage and a whole new expanded catering offering.
We had some concerns about whether we could bring this all together in time for the Starter's Pistol but our tireless race chairman Bob Gateshill worked non-stop and with the support of The Rotary Club, Sibelco, Women's Running Network (our marvellous caterers), other Rotary clubs, voluntary organisations and helpers and of course, you, the running public, it all came together on the day.
From feedback received, the event was a very successful one. Many of you commented upon how well you enjoyed the race and how you felt the new venue was in many ways an improvement.
The money raised for the charities was also exceptional and with gift aid and moneys collected direct by runners for their charities we calculate the total charitable benefit was over £17,000.
(By the way, please do encourage your sponsors to agree to gift aid their sponsorship. This gives a tremendous boost to their pledges)
Economic times have changed a bit since last year and the need for charitable giving is even greater. So please, if you are an existing runner, try to get as much sponsorship as possible. Old hands will know that we aim to match your fundraising up to 100% to double the value of your efforts. So start training and collecting now for 16th October 2011.
New to the Dartmoor Vale? Please find details elsewhere on this web page about joining the event and get out your running shoes! We have a great route, not too challenging - but with some inclines and descents to try your stamina and resolve. So if you are up for a challenge and would like to raise money for a good cause or just beat your personal best - please enter now and start your preparations.
Finally to new runners and our faithful regulars have a great day out - we will!
